Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot is a new digital work partner that enhances creativity, productivity, and abilities in Microsoft 365's Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and more.

It uses next-generation AI, large language models (LLMs), the Microsoft Graph, and Microsoft 365 apps to make your words the most powerful productivity tool.

Copilot improves and speeds learning, integrates LLMs, and integrates with GPT-4, Microsoft 365 apps, and company data in the Microsoft Graph. It creates, summarizes, analyzes, collaborates, and automates with company data, and can “animate this slide” and convert Word pages to PowerPoint.

Microsoft Copilot is a chatbot developed by Microsoft and launched on February 7, 2023. Based on a large language model, it is able to cite sources, create poems, and write songs. It is Microsoft’s primary replacement for the discontinued Cortana.

The service was introduced as Bing Chat, as a built-in feature for Microsoft Bing and Microsoft Edge. Over the course of 2023, Microsoft began to unify the Copilot branding across its various chatbot products. At its Build 2023 conference, Microsoft announced its plans to integrate Copilot into Windows 11, allowing users to access it directly through the taskbar. In January 2024, a dedicated Copilot key was announced for Windows keyboards.

Copilot utilizes the Microsoft Prometheus model, built upon OpenAI's GPT-4 foundational large language model, which in turn has been fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. The chatbot's conversational interface style resembles that of ChatGPT. Copilot is able to understand and communicate in numerous languages and dialects.

Microsoft operates Copilot on a freemium model. It allows users on its free tier to access most features, while priority access to newer features, including custom chatbot creation, is provided to paid subscribers under the commercial name "Microsoft Copilot Pro". Several default chatbots are available in the free version of Microsoft Copilot, including the standard Copilot chatbot, and Microsoft Designer, which is oriented towards using its Image Creator to generate images based on text prompts.

A whole new way to work

Microsoft 365 Copilot is seamlessly integrated in the apps people use every day, helping them stay in the flow of work and freeing them to focus more on the task at hand and less on the busy work.

  • Copilot in PowerPoint enables the creation process by turning ideas into a designed presentation through natural language commands.
  • Copilot in Excel helps unlock insights, identify trends or create professional-looking data visualizations in a fraction of the time.
  • Copilot in Outlook can help synthesize and manage the inbox to allow more time to be spent on actually communicating.
  • Copilot in Teams makes meetings more productive with real-time summaries and action items directly in the context of the conversation.
  • Copilot in Power Platform will help developers of all skill levels accelerate and streamline development with low-code tools with the introduction of two new capabilities within Power Apps and Power Virtual Agents.
  • Business Chat brings together data from across documents, presentations, email, calendar, notes and contacts to help summarize chats, write emails, find key dates or even write a plan based on other project files.
