Release Management (RM):

Release Management is a process that ensures the efficient and controlled release of new or changed IT services into production. It involves planning, building, testing, and deploying releases of software, hardware, or other IT components to ensure minimal disruption to business operations.

Release Management includes activities like:

1. Planning and coordinating releases
2. Building and testing releases
3. Deploying releases into production
4. Validating the release in production

Relationship between RM and CM:

In practice, Release Management and Configuration Management are closely linked because changes to IT assets (e.g., hardware or software updates) require both processes to be executed. Here's how they intersect:

1. Change Management: Changes to IT assets trigger a Change Request process, which involves assessing the impact of the change on existing services.
2. Release Management: The approved change is then planned and scheduled for release into production through the Release Management process.
3. Configuration Management: During the release process, Configuration Management ensures that the updated asset information is recorded and updated in the CMDB (Configuration Management Database).
