General Intelligence

General Intelligence, often symbolized as 'g factor', is a theoretical construct that represents a person's overall cognitive ability, influencing their performance across various mental tasks.

What is General Intelligence?

General Intelligence refers to the cognitive abilities that enable an individual to think, learn, solve problems, and adapt to new situations. It encompasses a variety of mental capabilities such as reasoning, problem-solving, planning, abstract thinking, comprehension of complex ideas, learning from experience, and learning from the environment.

General Intelligence is often measured through intelligence tests that aim to quantify an individual's intellectual capabilities. This concept is sometimes associated with the idea of a “g factor,” or general intelligence factor, which suggests that a single underlying intelligence influences performance across various cognitive tasks.

While General Intelligence is commonly associated with academic and professional success, it is not the sole determinant of an individual's abilities or potential. Other forms of intelligence, such as emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and practical intelligence, also play significant roles in personal and professional development.

The study of General Intelligence spans various fields, including psychology, neuroscience, and education, and continues to be a subject of research and debate.

G_factor_(psychometrics)
  • General Intelligence (g factor): A broad mental ability influencing performance across various cognitive tasks.
  • Intelligence Quotient (IQ): A numerical measure of cognitive abilities derived from standardized tests.
  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): A type of AI that replicates human cognitive abilities across a wide range of tasks, demonstrating versatility and adaptability similar to human intelligence.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a theoretical form of AI that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a broad range of tasks as competently as a human.
